A pearl is an instrument for reading the sea
Pearl oysters take no manufactured feed. They live on what the sea already carries, and they only thrive where the water is clean. A failing pearl farm is therefore an early warning that its sea is in trouble, and a thriving one is evidence that the sea is still healthy. This is where pearl cultivation parts company with most aquaculture: its economics point the same way as its ecology.
